Ripple: Wooden Sea Kayak
As a participant in Chewonki's Boat Builders program, I constructed an 18.5 foot long sea kayak I named Ripple. I built the structure of the kayak out of wood, then epoxied fiberglass onto the inside and outside. Finally, I painted and varnished the kayak to protect the epoxy. Once complete, I spent two weeks as part of a group paddling my kayak on the Maine coast and in the Saugenay Fjord in Quebec, where it handled high winds, strong waves, and rocky beach landings. My kayak is still in use 5 years later, with no hull damage and no leaks in either of its sealed compartments.
