Helping students learn & saving teachers' time

Organization: Columbia University
Class: Human-Centered Design and Innovation (Professor Harry West)
Dates: Jan 2023 – May 2023

Tasks

● Work with a team to identify an issue in New York City
● Research the issue and conduct interviews with all stakeholders
● Design an innovative solution, with a focus on user experience
● Present the solution to stakeholders and compare to current solutions
● Iterate on the solution based on stakeholder feedback
● Produce a pitch video

Actions

● Identified NYC education as our focus issue
● Interviewed teachers, students, and administrators
● Identified grading as a pain point: students need good feedback, but it takes a lot of time and energy from teachers
● Validated that AI models, when paired with a solid grading rubric, deliver accurate grades and useful feedback
● Created a pitch-level design for an AI-grader, with numerous requested features
    ● Students receive grades, personalized feedback, and links to resources
    ● Teachers receive an analysis of how each student is doing, as well as a class-wide summary

Results

● Lauded by teachers and students we interviewed, as it would save teachers 5 hours a week and improve feedback quality
● Outperformed and differentiated from existing tools in both features and user experience
● Class Grade: A+
